Web Design Matters In Search Engine Optimisation

Great graphic design is essential to any site wishing to attract and keep the interest of customers. But site owners should know about some of the meanings of over zealous graphic design for search engine optimisation.



A lot of folks would agree that graphic design is an important component in web design and development. Part of what good graphic design adds to a web page is esthetic, a somewhat subjective area where a web page either looks good, OK, or plain awful. Aesthetics could be significant, as the common look and feel of a website can change its credibility and the chance a visit will convert to a deal. Flash is a wonderful tool, and used appropriately it can certainly add sound and visual interest to your website. For some websites, possibly those specialising in art, music, video and so on, it may even be argued that Flash is indispensable in some cases. But on way too many websites, excessive gratuitous use of Flash effectively renders those websites unindexable by search engines. The worst examples are those where a complete page, and frequently the main page (the home page), consists entirely of a Flash presentation. Such pages generally hold little if any indexable text at all, with the content all tied up inside the Flash presentation... that your search engine merely cannot see, read or index! Excessive graphical content works much like a Flash presentation. Some websites consist of pages made up entirely of interlocking graphic images, with the images themselves containing the wording of the page along with other significant elements such as titles and headers.





So, graphic design is significant, but there are good reasons not to allow graphic designers a free hand in your web development procedure, particularly when they come from a powerful print or multimedia background instead of a net background. The issue is that, too frequently, graphic designers don't adequately understand the character of the web medium and of internet search engines in particular. This can cause a situation where the potential operation of a site in search engine optimisation terms is critically compromised by "features" such as Flash demonstrations, excessive graphic content, and excessive javascript. Used inappropriately, each of those can have serious consequences for where your site will eventually rank in search engines.





Javascript is just another great tool, and is almost indispensable on most complex contemporary websites for a great variety of jobs. But as is true with images and Flash, search engines don't do Javascript, so that any links which are locked up in Javascript code cannot be followed and those pages will not be indexed. In this regard search engines are rather different from web browsers.



The purpose here isn't that the baby should be thrown out with the bath water... Flash, images and Javascript are all part of the current web development toolkit. However it's important to not lose sight of the supreme goal of most business websites: sales. But if sales matter, then search engine position issues, in which case your graphic designers should be a bit more restrained, resourceful and creative.
